Nancy Harhut, a behavioral science expert, explains that autonomy bias is a deep-seated desire for humans to have some kind of control over themselves or their environments. When marketers can give people choices, it’s a good thing because a choice makes you feel like you have some kind of control. However, marketers should not go hog wild with choices. Giving people a few choices makes them feel like they have some kind of control. This is at times known as autonomy bias, which factors into the paradox of choice and the theory of “overchoice,” or choice overload.
