As CNBC reports, golf courses are experiencing a surge in popularity with record numbers of people flocking to them. While many experienced players are returning to the game, an estimated 3.3 million individuals visited a course for the first time last year, according to the National Golf Foundation.

Upon reviewing this news, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the skills and traits that golfers develop and those that are valuable in digital marketing. Here are a few examples:

Persistence and Determination: According to the PGA, less than two percent of golfers hit a hole-in-one each year, and it takes an average of 24 years of practice before a player achieves this feat. This means that success in golf largely comes from persevering through challenges. The same is true in digital marketing, where there are always difficulties and setbacks, but successful marketers stick with them.

Attention to Detail: Golfers learn to be vigilant about everything from their grip to their stance, as each detail impacts where the ball lands. Similarly, in marketing, paying attention to details such as aligning messaging with a persona and leveraging the right tools can determine the success of a campaign.

Adaptability: A golf course can be drastically different from one round to the next, with hole locations, starting points, grass length, and wind speed all varying. Golfers must learn to adapt to these changing conditions. This is also seen in digital marketing, particularly in areas such as market conditions and technology.

Creativity: Golfers use creativity to take recovery shots after a ball lands in the trees or find innovative ways to overcome obstacles on the course. Similarly, creativity is key to succeeding in digital marketing, such as finding unique ways to showcase products or services or developing new A/B tests to run.
